The Intro:
With the release of the new Jurassic World: Rebirth film, comes a whole new wave of creatures never seen before with return of some fan-favorites. I hope everyone got the chance to watch the film as I did. I watched the film twice, once in 4DX and ScreenX and both the experiences were amazing. Either way, for this film, we come to another unknown island in the lore of Jurassic and apparently this island is the factory and experimentation floor for Jurassic World.
Now, with this unknown island, Ile Saint Hubert, being the place where experiments take place is shown perfectly with the genetically modified monster-ish dinosaurs they have alongside super well designed dinosaurs. I particularly do not like most designs from the Jurassic World as I feel most does not have any distinct colors or patterns. Unlike this film where many creatures have pretty cool colors and patterns. This island experimented so much that the InGen personal had to escape the island and do their work elsewhere. Because there were quite a few misfits than it should have. Now, let’s not wait any further and see the creatures this island housed.
The Creatures that appeared in the film:
Dinosaurs:
- Ankylosaurus
- Apatosaurus (nicknamed Bronto-Billy)
- Aquilops (nicknamed Dolores)
- Brachiosaurus (2-headed mutant corpse in a tank)
- Compsognathus
- Dilophosaurus
- Mutadon (Hybrid between a Pteranodon & a Velociraptor)
- Parasaurolophus (corpse)
- Spinosaurus
- Titanosaurus
- Triceratops (2-headed mutant corpse in a tank)
- Tyrannosaurus
- Distortus Rex (Mutant of a Tyrannosaurus)
- Unnamed Ornithopod (possibly either Maiasaura, Edmontosaurus, Iguanodon or mutated Parasaurolophus)
- Velociraptor
That is mainly it for all the dinosaurs that were in the film and the roster is not that big and unlike the film trailer saying there are 2 dozen species, we don’t actually get to see exactly 24 species of prehistoric creatures but its close. Dinosaur, I am going to have discount Apatosaurus from the list because we saw it on the main land, not the island. Mutadon, I am gonna keep it in the species count but not sure about Distortus Rex.
Weirdly enough, the film does not outright state it is a mutant dinosaur because none of the characters we follow have worked for InGen to know this. And the people who did work for that project, either died or escaped and never came back to this island. So, I am a little iffy on that. I know this is going to sound controversial but I kind of liked the Mutadon and Distortus Rex.
Mutadons were something cool and felt very sci-fi experiment unlike the last couple of hybrids. It does not look exactly like a Velociraptor or a Pteranodon but resembles in some sort. Distortus Rex on other hand was the nightmare monster I used to have in my nightmares before the film and I love it for that reason. Now, there is a controversy about the size changes of Distortus Rex and I would just say that maybe there are 2 of them only the island. That’s the theory I am offering. Also, the lore implications is huge and there are so many questions that really need to be addressed in some way.
Also, the actual dinosaurs of this island are just gorgeous. Spinosaurus, my favorite dinosaur of all time had a great screen time and 2 character deaths that memorable, especially the last kill, if you know what I am talking about. Ankylosaurus, & Apatosaurus were okay too, Dolores was a fun dinosaur to have on-screen and Compsognathus was honestly the most beautiful design I have seen for a Compy. Dilophosaurus, Parasaurolophus and Velociraptor were alright and not much to write about.
But the Tyrannosaurus was brilliant! Absolutely brilliant and honestly, it might by my favorite Tyrannosaurus design of all time. The colors and patterns, the size and the chonk of it and not too mention the face, all of it makes it so good. I am speechless. And Titanosaurus, oh man! What can I even say about Titanosaurus. The people behind the film really took some lessons from Prehistoric Planet and made the Titanosaurus have a very thick neck with some creative features like the fins. Now, yes, it is a dubious species but you never who gets reinstated with more research and fossil finds. The whole scene was honestly better than the Jurassic Park Brachiosaurus scene because the CGI was that good and when Dr. Henry Loomis just ran towards was such a me moment that I would definitely run towards it if I saw one. Do check out my blog posts of some the dinosaurs listed here as well. Well, that is it for dinosaurs, now let’s move onto other creatures.
Pterosaurs:
- Anurognathus
- Baby Geosternbergia (Suriname Bar scene)
- Pteranodon
- Quetzalcoatlus
I love Gareth Edwards always adds a small creature in a new scenes and makes the island a lot more alive. Like Anurognathus does not add a lot to the overall plot or anything but it is just a creature of the island. Funnily enough, Anurognathus does a lot by showing another way through the Quetzalcoatlus Temple Nest without going through the risky rock climbing. Pteranodon was also pretty much miss it if you blink as it just flew around the Tyrannosaurus when the Tyrannosaurus woke up and the Pteranodon just flew by it.
But the best pterosaur of this film, is the Quetzalcoatlus. I do very much like this design and the small pycnofibers it has on the top and it’s bird-like behavior. Quetzalcoatlus also had a pretty gruesome human kill count. Just think of being swallowed by a huge flying reptile only to be digested alive in the stomach. There has been some debate as to why the Quetzalcoatlus looks different from the Dominion version and the explanation is also quite tricky because they show the skeleton of the Rebirth version in a museum meaning it did look like that in real life. And in Dominion, Dodgson takes pride in that his cloned species are more realistic than the InGen versions, so what is it really?
This Quetzalcoatlus is probably another species which is smaller, Quetzalcoatlus lawsoni where as the Biosyn version is Quetzalcoatlus northropi which is a larger species. However, full skull fossils of either Quetzalcoatlus species have not been found and most of the scientific reconstructions we see are based off fragmentary elements of the skull. This is probably where the Jurassic World creature designers took the advantage of creative liberty and I must say the design is cool though.
Aquatic Creatures:
- Dunkleosteus
- Mosasaurus
- Unnamed Amphibian, most probably an Eogyrinus
- Unnamed Eel-like Creature
Aquatic creatures, unfortunately, got the short end off the stick again but made up for it with the amazing Mosasaurus sequence and my God, was this one of the best action scenes or what!! The Mosasaurus acting like an Orca with inter-species cooperation with Spinosaurus to hunt down our characters sick. This is probably the best usage of Mosasaurus as I did not see this kind of action with the World Trilogy Mosasaurus. Also this Mosasaurus is a very different version from the trilogy and a lot more colorful than just a plain countershaded light blue and white. This Mosasaurus had rippled spots with variations of green and a white underbelly. The underside texture was also very much whale-like as well as the sounds but it was just so cool.
The biggest surprise probably to me was seeing the head of a deceased Dunkleosteus. My eyes literally popped out when I saw it because that does not make any sense as to when InGen or any genetic engineering company got there hands on Dunkleosteus DNA to clone one, only to be caught by some fishermen. It was a surprise but a welcome one. I hope to see it get explained or used more in hopefully upcoming entries to the franchise. The other eel-like creature showed up for a while and we did not get to see the full design of it but it probably could have been a species of legless-amphibians, Phlegethontia and I am surprised with these weird additions and it just comes to mind like why would InGen would clone this species and for what reason. Same thing I thought when there was a huge amphibian with sail and a salamander-like tail. I believe to be an Ichthyostega, Acanthostega or maybe a mutated Platyhystrix. Some of these unnamed creatures can only be confirmed by the official designers.
Living Creatures:
- American Herring Gull
- Bottlenose Dolphin
- Panamanian White-faced Capuchin
So, uh yeah! There are living animals in a dinosaur movie. It’s there and that’s it I guess.
Referenced Only:
- Allosaurus (TV Screen; One Million Years B.C.)
- Ammonite (museum logo)
- Baryonyx (name seen on fossil crate)
- Brachiosaurus (mentioned/sign/animation/photo)
- Brontosaurus (mentioned)
- Dakotaraptor (photo)
- Elasmosaurus (museum poster)
- Gallimimus (name seen on fossil crate)
- Iguanodon (mentioned on museum sign)
- Kronosaurus (museum poster)
- Megalodon (jaw skeleton)
- Mixosaurus (museum poster)
- Psittacosaurus (mentioned on document for Aquilops)
- Pterodactylus (photo)
- Pyroraptor (painting)
- Starfish (museum poster)
- Stegosaurus (animation and photo)
- Styracosaurus (Photo and museum poster)
- Turtle (museum poster)
Yes, there are a lot of dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures in this list but I must warn you that this is not canon as they are mainly from props for the film and they can be easily retconned if needed. I mean, I would love to see a Dakotaraptor in action but there is no concrete evidence that it actually exists in the film universe other than just prop photos. This is very much trivial and I would love for it to mean something but it does not seem like it would be anything meaningful anytime soon.
Scrapped/Cut Species from the film:
- Carnotaurus
- Diabloceratops
- Mixosaurus
- 2-headed Velociraptor
Now these species were meant to appear in the film but got cut early in the production. I do feel these species, with some screen time would have added to the world positively. Seeing more than just Mosasaurus would pique a lot of interest like the Dunkleosteus. We all know the controversy of the 2-headed Velociraptor, only just shown as a replacement footage until the Mutadon’s design was fixed. Diabloceratops and Carnotaurus have Funko Pop versions but sadly not in the film and I really what role they would have filled. In my opinion, just put as many prehistoric species as you can because at this point anything is possible and I just want to see more dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures.
