The most concise, the truth, the definite answer is ‘NO’! The answer to the question, ‘Are AI Dinosaurs real or not?’ is no, AI Dinosaurs are simply not real dinosaurs. There you go and you can be confident that AI Dinosaurs are not real dinosaurs but this answer might make some tech bros feel angry or one-sided and if you do feel like that, I urge you to read through my reasoning as to why this is a factual answer.
What is AI?
Before we tackle as to why AI Dinosaurs are not real, we have to understand how generative AI works and how to creates AI Dinosaurs. Simply put AI is like your everyday regular software which is embedded in many softwares, most of them are rudimentary at this moment but will develop soon in the future. The way generative AI works is that it collects all kinds of image or video data and scans through all the codes and data and after analyzing all that, the software creates an approximation of the collected reference.
Now, the process itself is highly controversial and I suggest you to not use it if you do not want yourself to land yourself into legal problems because the difference between human learners and AI is that we learn by copying and soon creating our own style but AI does not know what it is learning and is just creating a weird amalgamation of collected references and some other sources which, mind you, did not take the consent or permission of the collected references.
When human artist posts a copy of an existing art, we can easily call out for plagiarism but for AI, it uses hundreds of references and that is why it is the hardest for accountability and that is the way how AI escapes all the blame. Now, we come into how does this affect Dinosaur art created by AI.
What is AI Dinosaur Art?
As an artist myself, I feel disgusted to say ‘AI Art’ because remember, not all skills are meant to be acquired by everyone or else everyone would be the same. It would be like Albert Einstein was physicist, lawyer, doctor, nurse, musician, sailor, pilot, artist and everything in between and imagine how could it even be possible.
So, thinking that I could just use AI to make ‘art’ and call yourself an ‘artist’ is diminishing of what makes us great as humans. Human artists, especially paleoartists, study about the dinosaurs fossils, what bones are discovered, all the research papers, what family of a dinosaur the new dinosaur may be and so much more.
After gathering up all the knowledge and key points about the dinosaur, they create an art that could be as close as to the actual living animal. Where as, an AI will not understand these data and create an accurate portrayal of that dinosaur. Every time you try to generate one, the algorithm will do its thing and churn out some garbage. If you don’t believe me, let’s do a side by side comparison.
Let’s take a look at the 2 images! Can you tell which one is more close to looking like an actual Triceratops? I think it is the first one is what I would say if I was an AI Tech Bro but no, the second one is the most real looking Triceratops you can get. Gabriel Ugueto is a prolific paleoartist in the paleontology community and everyone respects his artworks for being so lifelike and realistic. I have been trying to get my artstyle to his level.
He studies all about the dinosaur before he does anything and makes sure everything from all kinds of physical features to reality of the dinosaur is all accounted for showing his work. Whereas the AI work is collecting all the data and gives you a jumbled mess of whatever meat suit it is. It does what it thinks it knows and the process will continue to be the same. Sure the data collection and analysis might get better over time but it cannot account for any changes or create anything new based on just the information and this is where human artists will always be above AI.
Why does real art matter?
Now why does this all matter? Who cares about human artist you might think but let’s talk from a business standpoint. There are a lot of customers on this planet but clearly there are 2 kinds, one who just consumes even if the product quality is bottom of the barrel and one who consumes quality products consciously.
This is another form of competition and that is how we weed out the dumb and the smart survives. This is true in almost everything where there is competition. If I were to make ‘AI Art’ about dinosaurs and my niche would be the dinosaur community, then the problem I would face is resentment, hate, negativity and malicious intent from the community I am trying to enter while another person doing the same thing is just making well thought out dinosaur art which he/she researched and learned about before creating the art.
Now you can tell me from whom would you buy the products. Of course many will choose the quality product but some might go to the low quality one but the fan base will not last and never grow if your offering quality is always low and even down the line, your business might get hurt when the community will become aware and know that your business is just trying to get a profit for them.
Everyone needs money and many are trying the malicious way by hurting people. Humans were not meant to harm each other but as social beings, we are supposed to support each other and that is why we have been surviving but every time, it has been shown the darker sides humanity always leads to destruction and if this keeps up now for the digital age, we will see a destruction of the reality and muddle ourselves in a world of lies and unreal.
Never forget that the physical world is real, the bones you see in a museum are real. The physical things exist and you can touch them and become aware of their existence unlike the world and imagery AI is trying to show is all just a show and make believe. The dinosaurs generated by AI are nothing more than garbled mess of hundreds of stolen real artworks. That is why getting to know the real dinosaur is so important for you to learn, especially the younger generation.
